Less couch time equals fewer cookies

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Simply ejecting your rear from the couch means your hand will spend less time digging into a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

That is the simple but profound finding of a new Northwestern Medicine study, which reports simply changing one bad habit has a domino effect on others. Knock down your sedentary leisure time and you'll reduce junk food and saturated fats because you're no longer glued to the TV and noshing. It's a two-for-one benefit because the behaviors are closely related.

The study also found the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires two key behavior changes: cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables.

"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," said Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of the study published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."

With this simplified strategy, people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them, according to the study.

Spring wanted to figure out the most effective way to spur people to change common bad health habits: eating too much saturated fat and not enough fruits and vegetables, spending too much sedentary leisure time and not getting enough physical activity.

She and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients, ages 21 to 60 years old, with all those unhealthy habits into one of four treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure.

During the three weeks of treatment, patients entered their daily data into a personal digital assistant and uploaded it to a coach who communicated as needed by telephone or email.

Participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the three-week treatment phase. But when that phase was completed, patients no longer had to maintain the lifestyle changes in order to be paid. They were simply asked to send data three days a month for six months and received $30 to $80 per month.

"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said.

The results over the next six months amazed Spring. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."

From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the six-month follow-up, the average servings of fruit/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9; average minutes per day of sedentary leisure went from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7 and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.

About 86 percent of participants said once they made the change, they tried to maintain it. There was something about increasing fruits and vegetables that made them feel like they were capable of any of these changes," Spring said. "It really enhanced their confidence."

"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

Facebook Working on Smartphone?

Facebook continues to beef up its mobile strategy - just last week it launched a dedicated Facebook camera app and it has recently acquired mobile app companies, including Instagram and Glancee. But according to The New York Times, Facebook is aiming bigger than apps that run on the iPhone or Android phones. It might just release its own smartphone.

According to the New York Times' anonymous sources, Facebook is preparing to release a phone by next year.

"The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the?iPhone, and one who worked on the?iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said," Nick Bilton of the New York Times reported on Sunday.

Previously other technology sites have reported similar Facebook phone speculation. In 2010, TechCrunch reported that Facebook was looking to create its own phone. Late last year, AllThingsD reported that a phone codenamed "Buffy" was being tested. The Times now reports that Facebook continues to work on the "Buffy" phone and has hired numerous hardware engineers, many of which are former Apple employees. According to the Times' sources, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn't want Facebook to be just another app that runs on a phone.

Facebook would not comment directly on the statement and instead?referred?the Times ?to a previous statement.?"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."?Last year, HTC released the HTC Status, an Android phone that offered a deeper Facebook experience with dedicated Facebook buttons.

According to? Facebook's IPO filing, out of its total?825 million users, 488 million actively accessed Facebook's mobile products in March. And with that, you can see why a Facebook phone might seem pretty appealing to the newly public company.

Reporter cooks and eats Elizabeth Warren?s ?Cherokee? recipes

Charles C.W. Cooke, writer at the National Review magazine, lived up to his name by taking his reporting to an extra culinary level. Cooke actually prepared the recipes that Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren submitted and published in the 1984 cookbook "Pow Wow Chow."

While Warren's five recipes aren't all that authentically Cherokee, they are pretty darn tasty, says Cooke.

"Most of its recipes owe at least as much to John Smith as to Pocahontas, and overall it suffers from the publishers' inability to appreciate that simply writing 'Cherokee' on a recipe for lasagna or for oriental beef stir-fry does not make it so," Cooke writes after making the dishes. Here's Cooke's review of Warren's "Cold Omelets with Crab Meat" recipe, which, as publications have noted, was originally published by the New York Times Service and served at New York's Le Pavillon restaurant:

Whatever its provenance, the dish was rather tasty. The recipe undoubtedly works best with the cold omelet. On its own, the crab dressing is a touch salty, and so the chili sauce is an inspired counterpoint, adding a little kick at the end of each mouthful and keeping the whole thing in balance. Make sure, however, not to overdo the chili, as this may well make your eyes water.

Luxury Homes, Home Builders - Building Luxury Homes: 3 Things ...

If you're considering luxury homes and are looking for the right home builders for your property, there are plenty of things that you must think about. Choosing the wrong home builders can mean that your project is over budget and delayed, but it can also mean that you don't get the special touches that you're looking for. Look at a number of display homes before you narrow down which home builders you might consider working with to help make your decision easier, but doesn't forget about these three things.

Reputation Of The Builder

When you're looking for luxury homes, the reputation of the builder is vital. While some new builders are perfectly safe to use, it's a better bet to find one that's established within your community. This can help ensure that you're receiving a house that's structurally sound and backed by a company that's proven itself and stood the test of time.

Don't Forget About Luxury Baths, Stunning Kitchens And Sun Porches

When looking into luxury homes, don't forget the, well, luxury! Look for an open floor plan and high ceilings since these things can help make your house open and inviting. However, that's not all. It's said that kitchens and baths make a house and luxury homes are no exception.

Look for designer kitchens that are full of timeless stainless steel appliances, large walk in pantries to hold all your ingredients and even scullery areas. A scullery is a fairly new touch in luxury homes and it's a tucked away workspace just off the kitchen that's complete with a sink and everything you need to prepare a meal. Having a scullery means that homeowners will be able to tuck meal and party preparations behind closed doors and not mess up their kitchens.

One last popular touch is a sun porch that increases a home's living space. Many houses open right up to their outdoor living space so look for a house with sliding glass doors that can open up entirely so you can enjoy both the indoors and the outdoors.

Protect The Environment With Features Like Solar Power Generation And More

Lastly, make sure your house is doing its part to help the environment. Ask to make sure your house will be orientated the correct way. A home that's facing the wrong direction means that the heating and cooling systems need to work overtime just to keep the inside comfortable. Another way your home builders can help protect the environment is to use a solar power generation system to generate electricity for the house. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which is good for everyone. Other environmentally friendly touches can include smart flush toilets, solar gas boosted hot water and sufficient insulation.

When you're looking into luxury homes, make it a point to tour quite a few different display homes from many different home builders. Doing your research before you choose your builder can help ensure that you end up with a home that you'll love for years and years to come.

Buyers looking for luxury homes in Perth can find the home of their dreams from National Homes. The home builders in Perth have a number of display homes in WA for prospective buyers to consider. To see floor plans or to learn more, please visit its site.

Pedrioa hurt in Red Sox's win over Tigers

By JIMMY GOLEN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:47 p.m. ET May 28, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Mike Aviles wanted to take advantage of his second chance, even though he wasn't entirely sure he earned it.

After an umpire's mistake on what should have been the third strike, Aviles lined a single to center to spark a three-run second inning that gave the Boston Red Sox the lead for good in a 7-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

"I got another swing, got another hit, one run scored there and we ended up scoring two more right after that," Aviles said. "It helped us out, gave us momentum and we kept rolling from there."

Felix Doubront pitched six innings of four-hit ball, Ryan Sweeney had three hits after being activated from the disabled list and Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for Boston. The victory was tainted by an injury to 2008 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia, who left in the fifth inning with a jammed right thumb.

"He'll probably have some tests," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "Right now I don't think he could play tomorrow, if I was a betting man. But don't bet on it."

Detroit played most of the game without manager Jim Leyland and third-base coach Gene Lamont, who were ejected after the umpires appeared to blow the call on Aviles' foul tip. Leyland argued with the umpires until they tossed him from the game, then erupted in the visitor's clubhouse after it was over.

"There shouldn't have been a second-inning rally," he said, his voice rising. "There were three outs. I've been in the game a long time. ... You guys need to write something and hold people accountable."

With two outs and a runner on second, Aviles swung at what would have been strike three. It was ruled a foul tip by plate umpire Jeff Nelson, and on appeal to first base ump Bill Welke the ball was determined to hit the dirt before catcher Gerald Laird could glove it.

Replays appeared to show a clean swing and miss by Aviles, and Laird clearly caught the ball before it could hit the ground, meaning Aviles should have been out.

Aviles lined an RBI single to center. Daniel Nava doubled him home and scored on Pedroia's single to make it 4-1 before Adrian Gonzales hit an inning-ending groundout to first base.

"I'm pretty sure he caught it, but I'm not sure," said Aviles, who hadn't seen the replay. "The first thing I said was `bounce.' I didn't want to strike out. I don't know anybody that wants to strike out. I honestly don't know a hundred percent but he might have caught it."

Leyland came out to argue with third-base umpire Tim Tschida, joining an already angry Lamont. The manager had retreated to the dugout but was apparently still yelling at the crew when Welke tossed him.

After making a "Who, me?" expression, Leyland came back onto the field to argue some more.

In the visiting manager's office afterward, Leyland held forth in a profane rant about holding everyone in the game accountable, asking reporters, "Was that a ridiculous call? Then write that it was a ridiculous ... call!"

"I'm not going to sit here and rip umpires," Leyland said, alternating between enraged and merely agitated. "I'm the most protective person in the world of umpires. I protect them more than anybody in the game."

Doubront (5-2) gave up home runs to Gerald Laird and Delmon Young and just a pair of singles. He struck out six and walked one.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer in the ninth, and Doug Fister (0-3) allowed six runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings.

Saltalamacchia, Aviles and David Ortiz all had two hits for Boston, which bounced back after blowing a ninth-inning lead against Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Red Sox scored one in the first and then three more in the second, taking advantage of a controversial call that led to the ejections.

Boston added one more in the third on Saltalamacchia's homer, then solo runs on Will Middlebrooks' infield single in the sixth and Aviles' RBI double in the eighth.

Laird had two hits for the Tigers.

NOTES: The Red Sox honored former right fielder Trot Nixon before the game for his contributions to the 2004 team that ended the franchise's 86-year championship drought. Nixon was presented with a No. 7 insert from the manual scoreboard and a mounted pine tar-stained helmet like the one he used to wear. ... Pedroia was hurt diving for Danny Worth's grounder at the end of the fifth inning. He was replaced by Nick Punto. .. Sweeney was activated from the DL before the game and OF Che-Hsuan Lin was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Me and Adam give a director's commentary for, ?Made This For You ...

How it happened:

I wanted to do something special for the 2012 American Writers and Poets Conference (AWP), which was to be held in Chicago at the end of February. I conceived the project as a sort of audio guide to the present and future of literature, and on February 19th I went into Will Jones? Yellow Hat Studios with the tracks for this album in sequence. Still, I was unsure if anyone else would dig the ?mix tape? I had built out of three tracks from a finished album recorded over two years ago, three tracks from an unreleased album recorded a year ago, six tracks recorded two days prior to final production, and an assortment of sometimes candid and sometimes orchestrated audio clips of varying fidelity, which I whittled down from seven hours worth of iPod voice memos and radio show interviews. Determined to have a finished product before leaving St. Louis for the AWP, Will Jones and I completed the album at around 1:15AM on the 21st?just a week before the release and so close that it was yet to have its title, ?Made This For You: The Mix Tape As Literature.? I want to show some love to Will for helping me pull this off. ?I?d like to add a special thanks to KDHX 88.1 and Sou?wester Literary Magazine if possible.

?

Track by track:

?

?Turning It On,? This first bit contains SIUE grad students and a professor at Stagger Inn, a short clip of Adam Sirgany?s (He?s an SIUE Graduate Student with Creative Writing Specialization.) Saxophone from Vince Caf?, and novelist Lloyd Kropp either from a selection of Literature for the Halibut or a recording I did of him at Sacred Grounds in Edwardsville.

?

?Inferno? is a retelling of Dante?s story with Eliot and Shakespeare thrown in for good measure. Emily Sudholt is singing the hook. (She interned at NASA, by the way.)

People that are somewhere in this track are: Will Jones, Jerry Hill/ DJ Uptown, Mic Boshans of Humdrum and Nee, Elaine Holtz, Dan Meehan of Humdrum, Dan McKenzie, Emily Sudholt, Josh Evans, Shae Moseley of Ghost in Light, Dustin Sendejas of Arts & Sciences, Jon Weiss of Arts & Sciences

?

?Ander Monson, I?m Losing You,? This was a section of a prerecorded interview. This section of the interview wasn?t aired on KDHX as his phone was cutting out. But Monson?s book, Other Electricities, has been described by Michael Martone as being, ?Like Franklin?s discovery of the electricity we do know, Ander Monson?s luminous, galvanized book represents a paradigm shift. The frequencies of the novel have been scrambled and redefined by this elegant experiment.?

?

?Faust? self explanatory, right?

?

?Taking Shots At Legends: Bob Dylan Now Works For Cadillac,? This was a late night think tank featuring me in a bad mood about Bob Dylan. I love Freewheeling Bob Dylan, but do not love Cadillac. Neil C. Luke and Nate Fisher (SIUE Grad Student in Creative Writing) speak up for dear old Bob. I?m not especially proud of this moment. But this mix tape idea wasn?t about clipping moments where I?m proud of myself. There are plenty of moments where I?m on there stuttering, more on this later (if you ask).

?

?Overhearing Black Power Poems,? is a response to a reading the that the Eugene Redmond Writers Club put together at the Mo History Museum featuring Haki R. Madhubuti, Amiri Baraka, and my former SIUE professor Eugene Redmond. The track features SIUE Graduate Creative Writing Students Adam Sirgany on sax and David Rawson on bass.

?

?Adam Says It?s About Fame,? Adam Sirgany, Tim Harvey and me, running our mouths at Stagger Inn.

?

?The Thermodynamics Of Laundromats,? is a Dan Meehan original beat, we think. I sent it to him and he thinks he remembers recording it for me at my old place in St. Louis.

?

?Adam Doesn?t Save The World,? Adam Sirgany running his mouth at Stagger Inn.

?

?Matt Madden?s Dream Machine,? Artist and Author and Friend Matt Madden, exert from Literature for the Halibut.

?

?Giant Man, After Matt Kindt: Graphic Novel As Poem And Song,? Matt?s book is also becoming a movie, but there?s already an River Front Times story on that.

?

?How Many Purses David?? David Rawson runs his mouth at the Stagger Inn.

?

?Basquiat? is another massive track with all or most of these people: Will Jones, Jerry Hill/ DJ Uptown, Mic Boshans of Humdrum and Nee, Elaine Holtz, Dan Meehan of Humdrum, Dan McKenzie, Emily Sudholt, Josh Evans, Shae Moseley of Ghost in Light, Dustin Sendejas of Arts & Sciences, Jon Weiss of Arts & Sciences

?

?He Marries The Legless Woman,? Lloyd Kropp taken out of context in a recording of him I did at Sacred Grounds.

?

?The Fly,? Features Carl Pandolfi of The Lettuce Heads on drums and bass, and Adam Sirgany on sax.

?

?Extra,? Adam Sirgany, Tim Harvey and me, running our mouths at Stagger Inn.

?

?Reanimator? is a true story about this Scientist Mark Roth. (www.esquire.com/features/best-and-brightest-2008/bringing-back-the-dead-1208)

?

?Scott Phillips In French And Jedidiah Ayres In Laughter,? clipped from Literature for the Halibut.

?

?Alma Mater,? is me, the geese, and a memory.

?

?Is The Book Dead, Al Katkowsky?? is clipped from Literature for the Halibut.

?

?Lowdown Redhead Blues: How My Ex-Girlfriend Slept With Ryan Adams While I Was In L.A.? Also true story. Recorded live at Venice caf? with the iPhone in my pocket. Adam Sirgany and I had never played together before that night. We don?t know what that drummers name was, but we liked him, and still do.

?

?Dundee? is clipped from Literature for the Halibut.

?

?Faux Pas? Adam Sirgany on sax and David Rawson on bass.

?

?Really Creepy Breathy,? David Rawson runs his mouth at the Fine Dinning Hall at SIUE.

?

?Death By Blackhole,? is writing for astophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who has a book by the same name. The track features Carl Pandolfi of The Lettuce Heads on drums, bass, and piano.

?

?Curtain Comes Down,? is Lloyd Kropp taken out of context in a recording of him I did at Sacred Grounds.

?

?

?

?

Jason Braun is Jason and The Beast. These are his friends who helped him on this:?

Today in History

Today is Monday, May 28, the 149th day of 2012. There are 217 days left in the year. This is the Memorial Day observance.

Today's Highlight in History:

On May 28, 1912, the Senate Commerce Committee issued its report on the sinking of the Titanic. Sen. William Alden Smith, R-Mich., chairman of the special subcommittee that looked into the disaster, cited a "state of absolute unpreparedness," improperly tested safety equipment and an "indifference to danger" on the part of the ship's captain, Edward Smith, as being among the causes of an "unnecessary tragedy."

On this date:

In 1533, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, declared the marriage of England's King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn valid.

In 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, made up of freed blacks, left Boston to fight for the Union in the Civil War.

In 1892, the Sierra Club was organized in San Francisco.

In 1918, the Battle of Cantigny (kahn-tee-NYEE') began during World War I as American troops captured the French town from the Germans.

In 1934, the Dionne quintuplets ? Annette, Cecile, Emilie, Marie and Yvonne ? were born to Elzire Dionne at the family farm in Ontario, Canada.

In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington signaling that vehicular traffic could begin crossing the just-opened Golden Gate Bridge in California. Neville Chamberlain became prime minister of Britain.

In 1940, during World War II, the Belgian army surrendered to invading German forces.

In 1959, the U.S. Army launched Able, a rhesus monkey, and Baker, a squirrel monkey, aboard a Jupiter missile for a suborbital flight which both primates survived.

In 1961, Amnesty International had its beginnings with the publication of an article in the British newspaper The Observer, "The Forgotten Prisoners," by lawyer Peter Benenson.

In 1972, Edward, The Duke of Windsor, who had abdicated the English throne to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson, died in Paris at age 77.

In 1985, David Jacobsen, director of the American University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, was abducted by pro-Iranian kidnappers (he was freed 17 months later).

In 1987, to the embarrassment of Soviet officials, Mathias Rust (mah-TEE'-uhs rust), a young West German pilot, landed a private plane in Moscow's Red Square without authorization. (Rust was freed by the Soviets the following year.)

Ten years ago: NATO declared Russia a limited partner in the Western alliance. President George W. Bush told Pope John Paul II at the Vatican he was concerned about the Roman Catholic Church's standing in America because of a sex-abuse scandal. NBC announced that Brian Williams would succeed Tom Brokaw as anchor of its "Nightly News" after the 2004 presidential election. Mildred Wirt Benson, creator of the "Nancy Drew" children's mystery stories, died in Toledo, Ohio, at age 96.

Five years ago: The United States and Iran broke a 27-year diplomatic freeze with a four-hour meeting in Baghdad about Iraqi security. President George W. Bush, during a Memorial Day visit to Arlington National Cemetery, honored U.S. troops who had fought and died for freedom and expressed his steely resolve to succeed in the war in Iraq. Miss Japan Rita Mori was crowned Miss Universe 2007 at the pageant in Mexico City.

One year ago: President Barack Obama praised Poland's transition to democracy following a meeting in Warsaw with President Bronislaw Komorowski. After a four-year blockade, Egypt permanently opened the Gaza Strip's main gateway to the outside world. North Korea freed Eddie Jun, an American it had held for a half year for reportedly proselytizing.

Today's Birthdays: Rockabilly singer-musician Sonny Burgess is 83. Actress Carroll Baker is 81. Producer-director Irwin Winkler is 81. Actor John Karlen is 79. Basketball Hall-of-Famer Jerry West is 74. Actress Beth Howland is 71. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is 68. Singer Gladys Knight is 68. Actress-director Sondra Locke is 68. John Cheever: 10 quotes on his birthday

John Cheever ? the great American novelist and short story writer sometimes known as "Chekhov of the suburbs" ? was born and grew up in Massachusetts. At the age of 17 he took the top prize in a Boston Herald short story contest. His short story "The Enormous Radio," about a device that broadcasted what people were saying in a building in New York, prompted New Yorker editor Harold Ross to tell him, "It will turn out to be a memorable one, or I am a fish." Later Cheever novels that met with critical praise included "The Wapshot Scandal" and "Falconer." May 27, 2012, marks the centennial of Cheever's birth. Here, to honor the occasion, are 10 memorable quotes from the author.

Tropical storm warnings for Southeast coast

MIAMI (AP) ? Forecasters have issued tropical storm warnings for the Southeast coast from northeastern Florida to South Carolina as a cluster of thunderstorms is gathering strength and expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl over the Memorial Day weekend.

The National Weather Service said Friday night that the storm's winds were at 45 mph. But they are expected to increase as the storm slows down in the Atlantic.

The system was about 305 miles (490 kilometers) from Charleston, S.C., and swirling toward the Southeast coast.

Tropical storm warnings are out for the Volusia/Brevard County line in Florida to Edisto Beach, S.C. The storm is expected to eventually move southwest and the Georgia coast could see heavy rains.

Higher than normal tides will be crashing against the Southeastern coast and may cause flooding. Heavy rain is forecast.

Meredith Becoming Another NH Antique Alley? | NEWS FROM THE ...

Posted on May 25th, 2012 admin

When folks think of heirloom and period piece shopping destinations, New Hampshire?s ?Antique Alley? on Route 4 in Northwood usually comes to mind, but there are a few other little towns in the Granite State that have a growing antique and art market, including this quaint village on the edge of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Located in the heart of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Meredith is near a lot of old farms and family camps, which have transformed into treasure troves for antiques over the years. Meredith has also become a thriving destination town, thanks to its one-of-a-kind hotels, restaurants, and shops, as well as a lively assortment of events throughout the year. This is a winning combination for antique shops and art galleries in town.

Ted McGuigan recently opened Antiques at Meredith Bay, a new shop on Main Street with a view of the lake. ?I opened in February and I?ve been doing well,? says Ted. ?Business has been very, very good.? I?m very pleased with Meredith and how it?s promoted.? Ted credits The Greater Meredith Program and the Meredith Rotary Club for supporting the town with various events during each season. ?Not many towns do that, so it?s a major plus.? Ted?s customers are tourists as well as local residents, and he carries items that are sourced locally in the Lakes Region. The shop features a wide range of items, from miniscule collectibles, to marble-top tables, to gold and estate jewelry.? Says Ted, ?A little bit of everything, something for everybody?s taste, hopefully.?

Ted thinks Meredith is on its way to being an antique destination, with four antique shops within walking distance in little Meredith Village. ?And there?s room for a couple more if people dare,? he quips. Main Street is home to many of them, giving the strip the name ?Antique Alley? for those who live here. Waukewan Antiques & Used Furniture on Main Street is family owned and has been in Meredith since 1994. They buy and sell antiques, gold, and silver, and also accept consignments. Many of the vintage items at Church Landing have come from Waukewan Antiques. Other antique shops and galleries on Main Street include Faye D Foster Antiques, Once New Vintage Wares & Salvage, and Gallery 51, run by Christine Hodecker-George, a local artist who does a lot of paintings for the Inns & Spa at Mill Falls.

Another shop right in downtown Meredith is Chi-Lin Arts and Antiques of Asia. This unique gallery has been in Meredith for almost 25 years, and showcases Asian fine art, furniture, and tea. In addition to its beautiful Satori tea garden, Chi-Lin has several gallery spaces inside where owner Suzanne Lee displays antique furniture, Japanese teaware, and contemporary art.?She also does special exhibits for various artists.??The gallery is a real mix,? says Suzanne.? ?Part of the shop is really classic vernacular furniture which was used by everyday people, and then the other part of the shop is contemporary art . . . most of the art has an Asian sensibility, and it?s all very contemporary.?

Art lovers have another great spot to visit while in the area. The Old Print Barn, just over the Meredith line on Winona Road in New Hampton, has over 50,000 works of art from all over the world on display, spanning four centuries and including works by such famous artists as Picasso, Whistler, Homer, Bartlett, Currier & Ives, Audubon, Benson, Hirschfeld, and Wallace Nutting. The gallery is one of the largest in New England, and occupies a 40? x 40? Civil War-era two story barn that was converted into an art gallery during the 20th Century. The giant hand-hewed timbers of the barn are still visible, giving the gallery an antique New England feel.? The Old Print Barn is a must-see in the Lakes Region, and is only a 10-minute drive from The Inns & Spa at Mill Falls.

In Moultonborough, another town on the outskirts of Meredith, is The Glass Knob, a fun little shop that features a combination of new, vintage, and antique items, and shows how to put them all together for unique d?cor.? The shop is home & garden oriented, and their sister store in Meredith, Lavender Blue, is a boutique that specializes in clothing, jewelry, accessories, candles, and baby items, and also has a collection of statuary in the garden. ?We?re the antiquy and they?re the boutiquy,? says Maureen at The Glass Knob.? Maureen praises the collaboration between shop owners, in particular between Robin of The Glass Knob and Paul Hough of Waukewan Antiques, for keeping business flowing in the Meredith area. ?We have a wonderful working relationship with Paul,? she says. ?He?s very knowledgeable, and has a flair for the primitive (1700s and 1800s) and unusual items.?

Antique shop owners have that passion in common. When asked about his favorite part of the business, Ted McGuigan says, ?The customers are fun, they really are. Just meeting people from all over the world . . . and then the other half of it is the hunt?trying to find the really unique items . . . it?s about finding the fun stuff that?s one-of-a-kind.?

Now is the time for antique and art lovers to bring home that special ?one-of-a-kind? item, as many stores are opening this Saturday for the summer season. With the good weather predicted and the 21st Annual Memorial Weekend Craft Fair at the Mill Falls Marketplace, Meredith should be bustling. While you?re in town, stop by the Etcetera Shoppe on Route 25. They?ve been in business since 1972, and offer quality, gently-used clothing, furniture, and household goods at great prices.
