NBC picks Guthrie to replace Ann Curry on 'Today'

NEW YORK (AP) ? With little fanfare, NBC appointed Savannah Guthrie on Friday as Matt Lauer's co-host for the "Today" show, one day after ousted Ann Curry's tearful exit.

Guthrie, a lawyer and former White House correspondent for NBC News, has been host of the morning show's third hour for the past year (the show currently stretches for four hours). After vacations next week, the new team officially debuts on July 9.

It's an understated introduction for someone taking one of the most important jobs in television news. "Today" is a cash cow and the jewel in NBC's crown, and has seen its longtime position of dominance threatened in recent months by ABC's "Good Morning America." Its troubles cost Curry her job.

Guthrie, who wasn't made available for interviews, teamed with Lauer on Friday and told viewers nothing about her promotion. It was announced by a press release a few hours later, the day before a summer holiday week, a time when news releases are usually buried instead of trumpeted.

NBC wanted her in place before the start of the Summer Olympics in London next month. "Today" will travel to the Olympians and the broadcasts are seen as a good opportunity for "Today" to regain some momentum after its challenge from ABC.

Guthrie, 40, will keep her role as NBC's chief legal analyst. She's been at NBC since 2007, joining from Court TV. She covered Sarah Palin's campaign in 2008 and was NBC's White House correspondent from 2008 to 2011. A graduate of Georgetown Law School, Guthrie worked in television for most of her career except for two years of practicing law in Washington. She worked in local television news in Tucson, Ariz., and Columbia, Mo., in the 1990s.

On the job Friday, Guthrie displayed the versatility necessary for someone in morning TV. She helped analyze the Supreme Court's health care decision during the first hour, then spread red jam on toast an hour later for a segment on Fourth of July party decorations.

NBC News President Steve Capus praised Guthrie's "undeniable range" in announcing the appointment.

"She has a one-of-a-kind combination of sharp wit and approachability, and our viewers value her journalistic skills and legal background just as much as her humor and charm," said Jim Bell, "Today" show executive producer.

The "Today" show team appeared noticeably more comfortable Friday than during Curry's last week of broadcasts. Guthrie joked with Lauer following a story about David Beckham being left off the British soccer team because at 37, he's considered too old.

"He's still young enough to be in those underwear ads, though," she said. "There's a silver lining."

"Thanks for that," Lauer replied.

Michael Phelps slips past Ryan Locht in 200 trials

Getting back at rival Ryan Lochte,?Phelps?stretched out to win a thrilling 200-meter freestyle at the US Olympic trials Wednesday night, setting up a duel in London that just gets more tantalizing with every race between the world's two greatest swimmers.

Lochte won the 400 individual medley on the opening night of the games, his third straight major victory over the winningest Olympian ever. But?Phelps?isn't going down that easily.

He got off to a stronger start that usual, leading at the first turn and holding the advantage through all four laps. Both swimmers got a big boost off the final turn, cutting through the water like missiles, and Lochte went stroke for stroke down the stretch. But?Phelps?stretched out his right arm at the wall, touching just ahead of Lochte. The winning time was 1 minute, 45.70 seconds ? five-hundredths of a second ahead of Lochte.

"Obviously it's been a while, so it felt better" to beat Lochte,?Phelps?said. "But there's still some things I can improve on."

Phelps' victory was even more impressive given his busy night. He didn't even have time to celebrate, hustling back to the warm-down pool to get ready for the semifinals of the 200 butterfly. He came back 40 minutes later to post the third-fastest qualifying time, moving on to Thursday night's final looking to lock up a chance to defend the gold he won at the last two Olympics.

"I feel old," the 26-year-old?Phelps?quipped. "Just getting in the water to race is what motivates me."

Speaking of busy, Missy Franklin left no doubt that she is swimming's next big star with a stunning performance in the 100 backstroke, signaling a changing of the guard in an event Natalie Coughlin captured at the last two Olympics.

Coming back to the pool just 20 minutes after qualifying for the final of the 200 freestyle, the 17-year-old "Missile" chased down Coughlin on the return lap to win with an American record of 58.85.

"I have dreamed of this moment, but I never thought it would come true at 17 years old," Franklin said. "Dreams do come true."

Coughlin got off to a typically strong start and was under world-record pace at the turn. But the 29-year-old couldn't hold off two teenagers. Eighteen-year-old Rachel Bootsma got past the 11-time Olympic medalist, as well, claiming the second Olympic spot in 59.49.

Coughlin was third in 1:00.06 and has only one more chance to make her third Olympic team: the 100 freestyle. She swam over to congratulate Franklin in the middle of the pool, but her chances of making a third straight Olympic team are hanging in the balance.

The only downside of counting down players like a weekend disc jockey ranks the top songs of the week is that, when you get to a certain point, it isn?t that difficult to figure out what players are going to be in the top 10.

The long offseason countdown of the players voted the ?Top 100 Players of 2012? concluded Wednesday after 10 weeks of building drama (sort of). Earlier this week, Viking Update broke down who the top 10 would be and, when the players were unveiled, all 10 made the final list.

Adrian Peterson checked in at No. 8, part of a four-man contingent from the draft class of 2007. That draft will go down in history for its hits and misses. Peterson was joined by Patrick Willis (No. 10), Darrelle Revis (No. 5) and Calvin Johnson (No. 3) in the top 10 selections. They join fellow 2007 draftees Joe Staley (No. 67), Joe Thomas (No. 82), Marshawn Lynch (No. 94) and Ryan Kalil (No. 99) on the final list of the top 100 ? making the 2007 draft memorable beyond first-round busts JaMarcus Russell, Alan Branch, Ted Ginn Jr., Amobi Okoye and Brady Quinn.

However, while the 2007 draft stole much of the spotlight, three of the top four spots went to quarterbacks ? none of whom was guaranteed anything when he was drafted. Aaron Rodgers checked in at No. 1, but there were more than a few concerns when he fell on draft day to the point of embarrassment before being claimed by the Packers. He spent three years playing caddy behind Brett Favre before getting his chance to shine and, with a Super Bowl title to his credit, he has more than lived up to expectations.

At No. 2 was Drew Brees, another Super Bowl champion whose career was far from certain when he came to New Orleans. Vikings fans will remember that Brad Childress had to make a hard decision on Daunte Culpepper and decided to shop him around in 2006. At the time, Brees was coming off a torn labrum and the Chargers were willing to let him go and ascend Philip Rivers to the starting job. Only two teams had an interest in Brees ? New Orleans and Miami ? because of a shoulder injury that produced a lot of speculation. When the Dolphins made the decision to pass on Brees, who wouldn?t have required compensation, to trade a second-round draft pick for Culpepper, the Saints were the only team with an interest. Brees and the Saints haven?t looked back since and Miami continues to have a revolving door at quarterback.

The third QB, checking in at No. 4, is Tom Brady ? the No. 1 player on last year?s list. Brady got the Patriots back to another Super Bowl last year and remains one of the dominant forces in the NFL. But, when he was drafted ? he was taken on the sixth round (No. 199 overall) ? every team in the league had passed on him multiple times.

If the top-100 list, as voted by the players themselves, proved anything (other than the NFL can milk a concept for two-and-a-half months), it was that where you were drafted doesn?t mean as much as what you do with your opportunity. Rodgers was a Green Room laughingstock. Brees was left for dead. Brady got passed on by every team in the league and, when he finally was drafted, it happened during an ESPN commercial break late Sunday afternoon. Four of the top-10 players were drafted after Uberbust JaMarcus Russell.

At times, timing and opportunity are everything, not necessarily when a player was drafted.

Lonesome George, famous Galapagos tortoise, dies

Galapagos tortoise, Lonesome George has died. The only remaining Pinta Island giant tortoise-believed to be the last of his species- was believed to be about 100 years old. ITV's Annabel Roberts reports.?

Lonesome George, the giant tortoise who became the face of the Galapagos Islands conservation effort, was found dead in his corral Sunday morning, according to a statement by the Galapagos National Park Service. He was believed to be more than 100 years old and weighed 200 pounds.

He is the last known Pinta Island giant tortoise, and his death likely marks the complete extinction of his subspecies.

Fausto Llerena, Lonesome George?s longtime caretaker, discovered the tortoise stretched out, leaning toward his watering hole. The cause of death remains undetermined and the tortoise?s body is being held in a cold chamber to avoid decomposition before officials conduct a necropsy, the park said.

For years, Lonesome George?s minders tried to encourage him to procreate, even offering $10,000 for a pure Pinta Island tortoise. The reward went unclaimed, and park conservationists brought in four female tortoises of similar species, but their eggs proved infertile.

Sveva Grigioni, a 26-year-old Swiss zoology graduate student, nobly contributed to the effort by attempting to manually stimulate George, according to ?Lonesome George: The Life and Loves of a Conservation Icon,? a book by Henry Nicholls about the famous tortoise.

The giant tortoise is native to several of the Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago west of the Ecuadoran mainland. Lonesome George was the last known individual of the Pinta Island tortoise subspecies (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni).

A scientist studying snails spotted the tortoise later known as Lonesome on Pinta Island in 1971. The tortoise was brought to the Darwin research station the following year.

He was named Lonesome George (or Solitario Jorge) for George Gobel, the television star who played, according to a 2007 in The New York Times, the role of a ?hapless, hen-pecked husband."

Some 20,000 giant tortoises of different subspecies still live on the Galapagos, according to Reuters.

End May Be Nigh for Asteroid Disaster Movies

Like the poor Earthlings whose impending doom the genre chronicles, the asteroid disaster movie could be on its last legs.

That may not be immediately apparent, since a new killer-asteroid film, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," opens at theaters nationwide Friday (June 22). But scientists are making so much progress finding and tracking big, dangerous space rocks that a surprise civilization-threatening impact is becoming less and less realistic.

It's highly unlikely, for example, that a 6-mile-wide (10-kilometer) near-Earth asteroid ? the size of the space rock thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago ? lurks out there undiscovered, researchers say.

"We know everything out there that is that big, and there is just nothing right now that's in an orbit that's any threat toward the Earth," said Lindley Johnson, program executive for the Near Earth Object Observation Program at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. Hunting down the most dangerous asteroids

Asteroids much smaller than the dino-killer could still inflict catastrophic damage if they slammed into Earth. In general, scientists think a strike by anything at least 0.6 miles (1 km) wide could have global consequences ? most likely by altering the world's climate for years to come.

Observations by NASA's infrared WISE space telescope recently allowed astronomers to estimate that there are about 981 of these mountain-size asteroids on orbits that bring them relatively close to Earth.

That number may sound scarily large. But sky-scanning researchers have already found and catalogued nearly all of them, Johnson said.

"We're almost 95 percent complete on objects that are larger than 1 kilometer in size," he told SPACE.com. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

Preventing an impact

It's possible, of course, that one of the huge, as-yet-undetected near-Earth asteroids does pose a threat to our planet sometime down the road. But that threat could be mitigated, or even eliminated, if we spot it soon enough.

Researchers have several ideas about how to avert a devastating impact, given enough lead time.

One is the so-called gravity-tractor method, in which a small, unmanned probe is launched to rendezvous with the asteroid in deep space. The spacecraft would travel with the space rock, exerting a tiny but constant gravitational tug that would eventually nudge the asteroid into a benign orbit.

We could also be much more aggressive with our rendezvous craft, slamming it into the asteroid to knock it off course. We have the know-how to perform both of these missions; multiple spacecraft have met up with asteroids in deep space, and in 2005 NASA smashed an impactor into the comet Tempel 1 to determine the object's composition.

If the threat is more immediate, we could try to blow the asteroid up with a nuclear weapon. Many researchers are leery of this technique, however, saying that it would be tough to pull off politically. And the nuclear option may actually do more harm than good, sending a spray of asteroid chunks toward Earth instead of one intact rock.

So the key, scientists say, is to discover any potentially dangerous asteroid as early as possible so that all of our mitigation options remain on the table.

"If we do our jobs right, we'll know years in advance about a threat," Johnson said.

The regional disaster movie?

The progress being made on the really big space rocks is not grounds for complacency. There are many thousands of smaller near-Earth asteroids out there that could inflict devastating damage if they hit us, albeit on a local scale.

"A 150-meter object could be a pretty bad day for a state-size area," Johnson said.

And many of these mid-size space rocks have eluded detection thus far. Scientists have found several thousand near-Earth asteroids at least 0.3 miles (0.5 km) wide, for example, but a roughly equal number probably still await discovery, Johnson said.

The percentages get worse as asteroid diameters go down, since small space rocks are both more numerous and harder to detect than their larger kin. Still, Johnson voiced optimism that we could get a complete catalogue of the truly dangerous near-Earth asteroids within the next few decades ? especially if we launch a spacecraft that could search the region of space interior to Earth's orbit, an area that's tough for instruments on or near the planet to scan.

So in 20 or 30 years, movies that have asteroids wreaking havoc on even a regional scale may be unrealistic. And maybe that's just as well; a film about the destruction of Kansas or Illinois probably wouldn't fill the theaters.

But this is probably selling Hollywood short. If moviemakers want to rain death down on humanity, they don't necessarily need near-Earth asteroids. They could sling a space rock from the main asteroid belt toward us, for example, or use a comet. (Many comets orbit the sun at vast distances, and scientists think there may be billions of the icy bodies out there that we've never seen.)

And, of course, there's always planet Nibiru, the supposed stealth world trumped up by doomsaying conspiracy theorists. NASA has repeatedly assured us, however, that Nibiru doesn't exist.

Governor threatens to fire University of Va. board

Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell has warned the University of Virginia?s governing board to resolve the school's leadership crisis by Tuesday or he will ask the board?s 15 members to step down.

?I want final action by the Board on Tuesday,? McDonnell said in a statement released Friday. ?If you fail to do so, I will ask for the resignation of the entire Board on Wednesday. Regardless of your decision, I expect you to make a clear, detailed and unified statement on the future leadership of the University.?

Protests and resignations have roiled the Charlottesville campus since the governing Board of Visitors on June 10 forced Teresa Sullivan, the university's first female president, to resign midway?through a five-year contract. The resignation is effective Aug. 15.

On Thursday evening, supporters of Sullivan on the 15-member board called for a special meeting after they were able to secure enough votes to retain her,?The Washington Post reported.?The board is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Ten of the university's 11 school deans, as well as the Faculty Senate, have demanded Sullivan's reinstatement amid wide condemnations of the board's abrupt firing of the popular 62-year-old educator.

The Board of Visitors, headed by Helen Dragas, claimed they were unhappy with Sullivan's progress on financial, health care and other issues.

Sullivan defended her performance, saying, "Corporate-style, top-down leadership does not work in a great university.?

University of Virginia board to meet to address reinstatement of president

On Friday, Sullivan?s possible reinstatement prompted her interim successor McIntyre School of Commerce Dean Carl Zeithaml to suspend his plans to take over, effective Aug. 15. Excerpts of his letter posted by The Cavalier Daily, the university?s student publication:

In the three days since I accepted this position, I have talked to many in our community about what transpired on Grounds while I was out of the country on University business, and I received a great deal of input from numerous colleagues, including members of the faculty. I deeply appreciate and respect this input.

Clearly, we agree that the University and its reputation have been damaged these past 13 days, but that together we can mend the harm done and move our great University forward. Trust, one of our core institutional values, has been compromised.

There is an enormous groundswell of support for Terry Sullivan?s reinstatement as our president, and I understand that the Board will meet next week to consider this possibility. As a result, I am suspending any further negotiations with the Board regarding my status as interim president, as well as any activities associated with this role. In the meantime, I will return my focus to the McIntire School.

Trust cannot be restored in our community until the President Sullivan?s status is clarified and ultimately resolved.

Sullivan was elected to her position in January 2010, having previously served as the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan.

Supporters decried the board's move to remove Sullivan, announced on?June 10 in an?university-wide email sent to staff and students.

The fallout from the decision brought the resignation of a key ally of Dragas,?Vice Rector Mark Kington. He announced his resignation on Monday, nearly two years before the end of his term.

"I believe that this is the right thing to do and I hope that it will begin a needed healing process at the university," Kington said in the letter.

Several professors have also resigned in protest.
