A former chairman of the Penn State board of trustees says he's resigning as a trustee because his presence on the board has become "a distraction and an impediment" to its efforts to move forward after the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Steve Garban said in a letter Thursday it's because of his respect for the school he's stepping aside immediately.
Garban was harshly criticized over his handling of the crisis that engulfed Penn State after November's arrest of Sandusky, a former assistant football coach. Garban faced persistent calls from alumni and fellow board members to step down.
Sandusky was convicted of abusing 10 boys, some on campus. He has maintained his innocence while awaiting sentencing.
Garban hasn't returned a call seeking comment.
