With such a fast-paced schedule, how does Real Housewives of Orange County star Gretchen Rossi ever find time to work out?
?Because I travel so much, I end up doing a lot of my workouts on the road,? Rossi told Celebuzz in an exclusive interview. ?I know it sounds silly, but I?ll literally get into a hotel room, pick up the bedside lamp and start doing bicep curls. Sometimes you just have to improvise when you don?t have the time.?
Revealing her ?get fit? tips, Rossi ? who ranked No. 25 on the Celebuzz 101 Hot Bodies countdown ? gave Celebuzz the scoop on her guilty pleasures, her new secret health habit and which housewives she thinks are the hottest. (Hint: She doesn?t share an area code with any of them.)

Celebuzz: What was the ?a-ha moment? in your life that made you want to take health and fitness to the next level?
Gretchen Rossi: I grew up playing soccer and softball, and was a cheerleader. So, I?ve always been extremely athletic. As far as taking my health to the next level, though, it was actually in high school, because I suffered from an eating disorder. When I finally decided I wanted to get healthy and educated about how to stay in shape, I went and got my personal training certificate. I started training other people in college, which really helped me get past my own issues, because I was able to help people in that way. Now, I?m totally capable of knowing how to take care of myself on my own.
Celebuzz: What exercises do you do to stay in shape?
GR: I work so much that I don?t get the consistent time to be in the gym any longer. I do have a trainer that I work with, Ken Rawlins, and he?s amazing. I have him meet me at the house because my schedule is that crazy! He brings a bunch of equipment with him and we do everything from free weights and exercises on the bench to work with rubber bands and these things called gliders that I found. We?ve been using those a lot lately, which has been really fun. Basically, we do a lot of lunges and squats and pushups on a ball.
Celebuzz:?What?s on your workout playlist?
GR:?I definitely work out to music; it?s more motivating. But there are times that you don?t need it. I go on walks on the mornings that I?m up early. The dawn is so beautiful that you really don?t need music. Normally, though, I listen to a playlist of ?ampy,? get-you-going songs. Lately, it?s been my own song ?Unbreakable?; it?s really a great workout song! I didn?t even realize what a great workout song it was until I put it on my iPod; it really gets me going. Also, I absolutely love anything by?Britney Spears,?Lady Gaga?and?Katy Perry.
Celebuzz: What?s your secret for staying fit even when you?re pressed for time?
GR: What I?ve learned with my schedule is that it?s about trying to kill two birds with one stone. I try to improvise and think of new exercises and ways to stay in shape because if I don?t, I would never have the time to stay in shape. I love finding the time to go and do yoga and core Pilates; I love changing it up. I?ve always been really dedicated to making the time to take care of myself.
I love exercising, I?m active everyday whether I?m going for a walk, run, hike or bicycle ride. I?m always at the park running and playing with the dogs. I always try to stay active and moving. I?m not the kind of girl you?re going to find sitting and watching TV. Even if I am watching TV, I?m probably doing my sit-ups at the same time. I?m not very good at staying still unless I have to sleep.
Celebuzz:?Do you diet?
GR:?I think that working out is so important for your heart health and endurance and it feels good to sweat out toxins too. But I truly think that 70 percent of keeping shape is all about what you put in your body to begin with.
Anytime I?ve ever tried to diet in my life, it?s been a disaster, so it?s really about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Now, I do everything in moderation. If I feel like I really want a pasta dinner, I?ll have my pasta dinner, but I won?t eat the entire thing. Or, if I want an ice cream sandwich one night, I?ll make to be more strict with my diet the next couple days. I?ve realized that when I deprive myself of something that I?m craving, I?ll just want it more and more. Then, I?ll end up binging on something that I didn?t need to if I would?ve allowed myself to have little bits and pieces in the first place.
Celebuzz: What?s your guilty pleasure?
GR: Alcohol will always be on my list. I?m really more of a social drinker and have a cocktail when I?m out on the town on a Friday or Saturday night with friends. And, if I feel like having a bite of dessert when I?m out, I will. I won?t do much more than that, because that?s when you end up eating the entire dessert. I don?t do well with that.
Celebuzz: Do you have any secrets for total body confidence when putting on a bikini?
GR: First and foremost, get a spray tan; that?s the number-one top secret. It really helps to disguise cellulite. Also, little things like a really good moisturizer that makes you look shiny and pretty really helps, too.
Celebuzz: Do you have a secret habit that is part of your healthy lifestyle?
GR: In the last three months, I?ve really been been upping my vitamin intake ? MSM, Grapeseed Extract, things like that. I?m also trying this new product called Play Again, for healthy joints, because when I workout a lot they sometimes ache and hurt. I hate to swallow pills, let alone having to take them; but you really start to see your body change, so it?s worth it.

Celebuzz: Besides yourself, which Bravo housewife do you think is the hottest?
GR: I would say that Brandi Glanville is pretty hot. She?s got a really fit body and really tall, skinny legs. But so does Taylor Armstrong. They both kind of have the same type of structure. Even Melissa Gorga! Shoot, I don?t know. Then there?s Joanna Krupa who has a pretty hot, smoking bod. She?s coming out on the new season in Miami. She?s a supermodel, so she would probably win.
Celebuzz: What is your greatest health achievement or milestone thus far?
GR: I would definitely say getting over my eating disorder is one of them. I was bulimic, and it took me a really long time to get over that. To be honest, I don?t think you ever really get over something like that. I think it?s always kind of back there haunting you, but I finally learned to be healthy and confident and secure in my own skin. It wasn?t until five years ago that I finally got to that place and stopped comparing myself to tall, skinny models. I?m 5?5?, and I?m never going to have long, skinny legs. I?m more of an athletic build, and I really learned to appreciate my own body and to be thankful that God blessed me with my proportions. My biggest accomplishment was just becoming secure in my own skin.
Celebuzz: What inspirational advice do you have for readers in order to jump-start a healthy routine?
GR: I think it?s just about maintaining that healthy lifestyle and eating right. I?m lucky to have a great trainer who pushes me. So, I?d say if someone needed extra motivation to get yourself a trainer. Spend the extra money ? you?re worth it.

The Binding Of Isaac Is Coming To Consoles - News - Game Informer
The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen confirmed on his official Formspring blog recently that the game is being remade for consoles.
The remade console version will include the Wrath of Lamb expansion and will feature new modes, bosses, items, playable characters, co-op and other additions that could not be included in the Flash version of the game.
This is good news for console gamers who are holding out on the title. We reviewed the PC version back in October of last year, and we liked it quite a bit.

While I have always wanted horses, I managed to avoid keeping any animal in the ?livestock? category until I turned 50 and decided to get a trio of laying hens. Not realizing, of course, that chickens are ?gateway livestock.?
Within five years? time, I went from three slightly used chickens to 15 hard-working young layers. From a single raised-bed planter to plans for more than a dozen of them. From my childhood Breyer horses to three real ones. And, of course, from a quarter-acre suburban lot to Rancho Buena Fe?.
Coming next: Goats.
Nigerian dwarf goats, to be specific. Small, friendly and productive, with milk for cheese, butter and soap.
I mentioned on Facebook that I was getting goats, and publicly and privately I started getting word of goats who need homes. Farm sanctuary goats. Shelter goats. Mixed breed and meat goats. Because everyone assumes I?m looking for pets. Which I?m not, not really.
The only animals on this place who get a pass are the dogs and cats, and honestly, they contribute plenty in the way of emotional support and endless amusement. Everyone else (except for Bernadette The Weather Duck? and her companion, ABBA) contribute food, in one way or another. As for me, I bring in the mortgage money and I handle all the care. The rest of the animals:
- The horses get ridden.
- The chickens give eggs.
- The goats give milk.
The gardens provide food for me (and for sale/barter, eventually) with leftovers for the chickens, goats and compost pile. The compost pile gives back to the gardens.
But then, there?s the subject of meat. While I eat less and less meat over time (I?m becoming a ?Fork Over Knives? person, and the meat I do eat is largely raised here or purchased from sources I trust)? my dogs and cats are carnivores, and they?re fed that way. I have two massive freezers in the garage, and I?ll soon be adding another to accommodate serving as a drop site for SF Raw Feeders, a spectacular buying co-op that supports humane, sustainable, regional animal agriculture ? small family farms and ranches.
When I first got those three chickens, back in suburbia, I mentioned to my very sweet neighbors (two sisters who share a home) that I would have extra eggs, if they wanted them. One of them said, ?No, thank you. We?re vegans.? After a little probing whether it was a choice for health or because eating animals was unthinkable, I got that it the latter. So I said, ?You know, these eggs come naturally from chickens who live their lives to the best that any chicken could.?
?Oh no,? said the neighbor. ?We could never kill fetal chickens.?
?I don?t have a rooster,? I said. ?You?re not killing anything.?
They insisted you didn?t need a rooster to make more chickens. At that point, I let the matter drop. I just didn?t have the patience to explain high-school biology to them.
And I certainly didn?t have it to explain why feeding the leftovers of industrial animal agriculture to their dogs and cats (in a bad of kibble) negated pretty much everything they believed.
Which brings me back to meat.
I do not need to squeeze every last dime from my animals, which is why those who give a lifetime of eggs (hens), or milk (goats), or service (horses) will live out their lives here even when they no longer contribute. Beyond that, only the horses are guaranteed to never be fed to something else here at RBF. One of my dogs has killed a chicken or two, and when that happened, the unlucky hen is eviscerated, plucked and put into the freezer. She will later become dog food, fed back to the same dog who killed her. That wasn?t my plan for her, but I?m also not going to waste her final contribution by throwing her body into the trash. (Chickens who are sick I kill swiftly and mercifully, but they DO go in the trash ? I won?t feed sick animals to other animals ? which is more than you can say about a pet-food company.)
But chickens are not that hard to deal with emotionally, at least not for me. I can slaughter them, I can butcher them and since I made that leap, I stopped naming them. The two ducks ? Bernadette and ABBA ? are pets. The chickens are not, although there is always the possibility that one or two of them might become so, names and all. But as I said, barring accident or illness, the laying hens will live out their natural lives after they are no longer productive. The meats birds I?ll be raising next spring will not be. While they?ll be well-cared-for every day of their lives here, they will be raised to end up in my freezer, a few months after they come here. And I?m OK with that, too. The same goes with cockerels: We eat them here.
Pets or meat, we get to make the choice. That?s why I have a pet duck who I got after a field-training sessions ? once in which most of the other ducks died. I have no problem with death. I have a problem with cruelty.
And I really have a problem with people who cringe when I talk about killing poultry for the dogs or the table if they?re buying meat someone else killed after the animals were treated with less compassion than shown to your average end table. (I feel the same way about people who whinge about how ?cruel? hunters are, also while eating factory-farmed meat.)
With the goatly additions, though, I have to do some more thinking. That?s because (for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, such as people who believe in immaculate insemination of chickens) to milk from a goat (or any mammal) you need to breed them. The milk, after all, is intended to be given to offspring, not moochers like us.
While industrial dairies would do what industrial hatcheries do with male offspring if they thought they should get away with it (note: if you have a gentle heart, don?t look it up), what to do with males when you?re someone like me is a very big issue indeed. While the female offspring of a productive dairy goat is not problem to sell, there are not many ?pet? homes for neutered male goats, known as wethers. Then what? Goat meat is very good, but I know I couldn?t personally slaughter and butcher a goat I?d seen born. And I?m only barely able to cope with the idea of having someone else do the dirty work.
Yes, it?s the cute factor, I admit it. I don?t ever plan to have meat rabbits, pigs, cattle (even nifty small ones like Dexters) or sheep. If I can?t find homes for the inevitable wethers or deal with having them butchered for my freezer, next to the chickens I?ve killed myself or the meat I bought from SF Raw ? well, I?ll have no milk, just a goat pet.
And that, I don?t want, and can?t have.
The first wether, the boy goat I?m hoping to buy gave birth to a couple months ago, is staying, because goats can?t be kept as singles. He?ll be a pet to me and a companion for his mother. But that?s all the boy goats there?ll be here, one way or the other.

Mason mom inspired by daughter's strength | Cancer Kick
Mason resident Christine Lothrop volunteers for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for a very personal reason.
In 2008, Lothrop got the news that her daughter had cancer. Liz, a Mason Middle School eighth grader at the time, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
So began the difficult two-and-a-half year battle of Liz?s life. It included chemotherapy and radiation treatments that left her bald and bedridden for days, bone marrow aspirations and doctor appointments. She worked hard to keep up with her school work during the brief windows of time when she was well enough to do so.
?Liz looks at the glass more than half full, ? said Lothrop. ?Most kids on that [oncology] floor at the hospital have that disposition. It?s called fighting for your life.?
Thankfully, things are looking good for Liz these days. However, no one with blood cancer is ever considered completely ?cured? of the disease.
?That?s why I?m still doing all of the fundraising,? said Lothrop. ?It [the cancer] is like a sleeping giant in there. It?s still in there, but hopefully it will stay sleeping for a long time.?
What she does: ?I work on the Light the Night event for LLS,? said Lothrop. ?The Mason walk is Sept. 27 at the Mason Municipal Campus. I love this event because it is the only one that the cancer patients themselves can participate in (with LLS).?
She also spearheaded a local event now in its second year called Blazin? with Love. The event features a 5k walk/run and cornhole tournament that honors local blood cancer patients.
The most satisfying thing about volunteering: ?Knowing that I am making a difference and trying to save lives and giving to someone who can?t give for themselves because they are too sick.?

Chinese gardens explored in New York exhibit

The tranquillity and splendour of Chinese gardens are explored in a new exhibition that shows the importance of nature in Chinese art, life and culture spanning 1,000 years.
The exhibit, "Chinese Gardens: Pavilions, Studios, Retreats," at the Metropolitan Museum of Art features more than 60 paintings and textiles, ceramics and photographs of gardens and landscapes through the centuries.
The oldest work in the exhibit, which runs through January 6, is a scroll painting dating to 1050, and the latest pieces are contemporary photographs.
"Everything about the garden is a distillation and an intensification of what is there in nature. It is that emphasis that man draws inspiration and meaning from, that natural world, and reconfigures it in the garden, just as it is reconfigured in works of art," said Maxwell Hearn, the head of the Asian art department at the museum and the curator of the exhibition.
The works are featured in eight themed galleries encircling The Astor Court, a Chinese garden modelled on a 17th century scholars' courtyard in Suzhou, China.
Hearn described the exhibit as revisiting "the idea of Chinese gardens as an abiding theme, a source of inspiration in Chinese art."
From a huge six-metre-wide, 12-panel painting "The Palace of Nine Perfections," by the artist Yuan Jiang in 1691 to monastic retreats set in a magnificent setting in "Summer Mountains" (ca. 1050), the works show how gardens provided sanctuary, solitude, peace and escape, as well as sites for meetings, literary gatherings and theatre performances.
"The garden was the setting for a variety of activities," Hearn explained.
Like many of the works of art, which are all part of the museum's permanent collection, "Summer Mountains" is a scroll, which was meant to be opened gradually.
"It (the painting) is all about travellers finding their way to these wonderful temples nestled at the foot of these towering mountains," said Hearn. "But if you weren't able to do that you unravel the scroll and have the same vicarious experience. That is exactly how these scrolls were described and used in the 11th century."
The works of art show how gardens were gathering places for prominent people as well as peasants, and how they were more than rocks, plants and trees.
"They are emblems of the human condition and the human interaction with the natural world," said Hearn. "There is this amazing cumulative effect of gardens as the source of ongoing connectivity with the culture that came before us."

In August, Ohio University?s Performing Arts Series released the current show schedule for the upcoming school year, with a jam-packed Parents Weekend kicking off the year?s shows.
?I?m hoping that we have a bigger year than we have ever had before,? said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of the Campus Involvement Center, which puts on the series every year. ?Each year we add more events and I hope we continue that trend.?
The lineup also includes Second City, Mountain Stage, Project Trio, Tinariwen, Jeff Garlin, Tap Dogs, A Chorus Line, RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles, Women of Ireland and The Addams Family.
Second City, the improv troupe which hails from Chicago, and Mountain Stage, the live music event that is later broadcast on NPR, are both repeat events for OU. Both shows came to Mem Aud last year, and Holzaepfel said it?s no coincidence they?re back again.
?We bring Mountain Stage back because, even though it?s a retuning show, it?s different every time,? he said. ?Second City is coming back because we got such a great response from parents during Parents Weekend last year.?
Regan Onweller, a sophomore at OU, said she is excited with the added entertainment to the upcoming school year?s schedule.
?I?m really excited to see what the acts are like this year compared to last,? Onweller said.
Chris Young, the first act on the list, will be accompanied by Joanna Smith.
Young is an up-and-coming country musician who has recently racked up five No. 1 singles on the charts and was the 2012 ACM Male Vocalist of the Year. He was also nominated for Record of the Year.
?I?ve always been a fan of country music,? said Sara Dixon, a sophomore at Ohio University studying broadcast journalism. ?I?m pumped to see what Chris Young has in store for OU.?
Holzaepfel said the series received $94,000 to work with for the 2012?13 school year, the same amount as last year.
?We use the $94,000 plus ticket sales. So overall, we will do about $800,0000 worth of programs,? he said.
The associate director also added that despite the semester switch, the program will benefit in number of shows booked during the fall and winter season due to the shortened break period.
?Overall, the switch is a good thing for us,? he said. ?There were a lot of shows that we usually missed because we are out of school that we will be able to book this year.?
Despite the recent release and excitement for the series? schedule, the Holzaepfel added that the program still has some lose ends to take care of.
?We still have a lot of work to do on the Concert Series side, but as far as the main series goes, I?m very excited about it,? he said. ?It?s really going to be packed full of some big-name tours.?
Tickets for all shows can be bought in advance at the Performing Arts Series website or at the ticket booth at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The Exceptionally Rare Rides of Pebble Beach
As usual, the 2012 Concours d?Elegance was an extravagant affair. Along with the rest of the Dawn Patrol, we headed out into the early morning mist that cloaked Pebble Beach?s 18th fairway to watch the cars roll in. Among the magnificent mix of vehicles were curvaceous coaches styled by Ukrainian designer Jacques Saoutchik and opulent automobiles that once belonged to Indian maharajas, kings and princes. Other featured cars included Mercer, Fiat, AC and AC Cobra, and custom sport hot rods. These are some of the highlights.

Estate Planning in California: How to find a trust
A common question I see asked by people is,? "where can I find a copy of a living trust?" For example, a person heard that a relative died recently and remembered that he or she, the decedent in legal terminology, might have written a trust a few years ago but is not totally sure.
Many people erroneously believe that a government agency or superior court stores copies of living trusts. The simple answer is no. There is no government agency or superior court that stores copies of living trusts. Living trusts, unlike wills, are not required to be lodged with a government agency or superior court. See Prob C ? 8200.
A logical follow-up question is, "where then can I find for a copy of a living trust?"
The easiest method is to rummage through the decedent's belongings. Most people keep a copy of the trust at home in a secure place, unless they have a safe deposit box. Although for a safe deposit box, access would likely be an issue because of bank privacy considerations.
A creative way for determining the existence of a living trust is to check the real property records pertaining to the decedent. If the decedent did in fact write a trust and owned real property, he or she should have transferred the property into the trust via a deed. If that is the case, the deed should show the name of the trust, the trustee and the date it was signed. Furthermore, it is common for attorneys to write the trust transfer deed for clients, also known as a grant or quit-claim deed, so the attorney's name might be listed on the deed under "Recording Requested By" in the upper left-hand corner. Many attorneys are also notaries, so it would be prudent to check the notary's name on the deed as well.? The State Bar of California's website has an online search where you can look up the name of every practicing attorney in California. Yes, every single one of them and yes I am on there. Consequently, some attorneys keep copies of trusts they have written in the past.
However, if the decedent did not own real property, it is very challenging to know if a person wrote a living trust because public records will not reveal anything. In that case, you are looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Choosing the Right Insurance for Your Rental Property
The number one goal of your rental business should be to make money, not give it away.? One way to protect you and your investment is to have proper insurances in place.? Let me introduce you to four insurances that you should consider.
A Good Lease
The first insurance that I posses is the insurance of a good lease and a thorough move-in inspection. More than once I have referred to the pictures of a move-in inspection to counter a tenant?s claim about a pre-existing condition. I remember one time during a preliminary move-out inspection I noted a cracked ceramic floor tile. The tenant claimed that it was like that when they moved in. I turned on my laptop, pulled up the appropriate picture from the move-in inspection, and proved to the tenant that the crack was in fact not there when they moved in.
The next insurance that I possess is the kind purchased from my friendly neighborhood insurance professional. However, take note that there is more to consider than just regular old homeowner?s insurance. In fact, there are several kinds of insurance that you want to consider as a landlord.
Property Insurance
When it comes to insuring my personal rental properties, I have a landlord policy on each rental unit that I own, whether that unit is paid off or not. Landlord policies have the added benefit of additional liability protection for the landlord. You also need to ensure that each policy carries sufficient coverage to satisfy your mortgage lender.
Depending upon your rental?s geographic location, there are some additional property insurance policies you may want to consider. In California, many people have earthquake insurance. In other areas, you may want to investigate flood insurance. Your insurance professional can educate you on the particular hazards you might wish to insure against for your area.
Umbrella Insurance
The third insurance that I have is an umbrella policy, which acts like an umbrella over all of my other existing insurance policies. Examples of when this coverage may come into play include when a guest of your tenant slips and falls in one of your rental properties and is severely injured, or if a storm occurs and a neighbor?s property is damaged by a tree falling from your property.
Your landlord insurance policy has a liability limit. The umbrella policy picks up after those limits are exhausted and therefore usually carries a very high deductible, usually $300,000 or higher. Those deductibles seem high until you are sued for $750,000 and lose. In this example, the first $300,000 would be picked up by your primary insurance; the balance of $450,000 would be yours to pay. An umbrella policy helps pay that off. Otherwise, virtually everything you own would be fair game against that judgment.
Renter?s Insurance
The fourth insurance is renter?s insurance. Remind your tenants that their personal property and vehicles, or those of their guest?s, are not covered by any of your insurance policies against loss or damage due to fire, theft, vandalism, rain, water, criminal or negligent acts of others, or any other cause. Coverage for those items comes only through a renter?s insurance policy.
Renters insurance traditionally covers the tenant?s and any guest?s possessions, like furniture, clothes, computers, and bikes. Additionally, if a plumbing backup floods your property and renders it uninhabitable, renter?s insurance may cover the cost of a temporary place to live until the tenant can move back into your property. Some renter?s insurance policies may also have protection for the tenant against lawsuits.
You should always require renter?s insurance when the tenant has a pet in the residence. You do not want the tenant?s dog biting a neighboring kid and then have the neighbor sue you. At my office, we will not allow tenants to receive keys without proof of a paid-in-full renter?s insurance policy. If the tenant does not have a policy at the time of lease signing, we make the tenant call an insurer and obtain one on the spot.
Insurance is all about risk management; you buy or require insurance to manage some of those risks. Knowing your real estate laws is the best defense. After that, obtaining the insurances discussed in this article is an intelligent way to begin managing your risk.

Google, Mozilla and Wikimedia projects get Maya language translations at one-day 'translathon'
Twenty native speakers of Yucatec, Mexico's most widely spoken Mayan tongue, met last Thursday to help bring the language to Google, Mozilla and Wikimedia projects. The event, dubbed Mozilla Translathon 2012, was organized to provide translations for Firefox, Google's Endangered Languages Project, the WikiMedia software that powers Wikipedia and 500 crowdsourced articles, to boot. Finding the right words, however, can often be a tricky proposition. "There are words that can't be translated," Mozilla's Mexico representative Julio Gómez told CNNMéxico. "In Maya, file doesn't exist. Tab doesn't exist." Gómez continues to explain that the group may keep foreign words as-is, or find other terms to represent the same ideas. In addition to software localization, it's believed that the effort could allow Maya speakers to "recover their identity and their cultural heritage," according to Wikimedia México president Iván Martínez. AP NewsBreak: Refinery probe focuses on corrosion
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Federal investigators probing the cause of a massive Chevron oil refinery fire are focusing on possible corrosion in a decades-old pipe the company inspected late last year.
Investigators with the U.S. Chemical Safety Board said Saturday they are trying to determine why Chevron did not replace the pipe when it had a major five-year inspection last November.
That inspection led Chevron to replace an old pipe connected to the one that failed Monday, catching fire, sending up black smoke and causing thousands to seek medical attention for health issues in one of the most serious U.S. refinery fires in recent years.
Chevron said Saturday it too is seeking to understand why the accident occurred.
"We agree that this is a serious incident that warrants thorough investigation. We are cooperating with all regulatory agencies and are committed to better understanding the root cause of this incident," said Sean Comey, a company spokesman.
The inspectors have not yet seen testing records for the pipe that failed, but given its age and the condition of pipes connected to it, they believe corrosion is a strong possible cause of its failure.
Also, investigators told The Associated Press that more than a dozen Chevron refinery workers were engulfed by vapor and narrowly escaped serious injury when it ignited.
The Richmond refinery, located about 10 miles northeast of San Francisco, produces about 16 percent of the region's daily gasoline supply.
The crude unit where the fire occurred is a key part of the refinery, helping to create a specialized blend of cleaner burning gasoline that satisfies air quality laws in California. On Saturday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in California was $4.04, up from $3.86 cents Tuesday.
While high crude prices have driven prices up nationwide, the partial loss of production at Chevron's Richmond refinery has also had an effect on driving prices in the state even higher, analysts said.
The incident began Monday at 4:15 p.m., when a small dripping leak was detected by refinery workers. When engineers responded to find the leak's cause, they removed insulation around the pipe. Shortly thereafter, a vapor cloud was released.
"Due to the high temperature of the material in the tower, in excess of 600 degrees Fahrenheit, the gas-oil immediately formed a large flammable vapor cloud," chemical safety board investigators said.
County officials say sirens were activated to warn residents of an accident when the vapor ignited, and the company later alerted county officials.
Chevron's response and Contra Costa County's emergency warning system are being investigated by several agencies, including the federal chemical safety agency.
More than 4,000 people were treated and released at from hospitals in the days following the fire, officials have said. Chevron has set up a claims center for people who were affected, which by Friday had received about 2,000 calls.
Investigators said, in general, all pipes corrode over time.
The pipe that failed Monday dated back to the 1970s, but it is still unclear whether the thickness testing conducted by Chevron in its last major inspections noted corrosion in that specific, 8-inch pipe.
However, investigators said a 12-inch pipe connected to the one that leaked Monday was found to be corroded, and was replaced after the November "turnaround," an industry term for when a refinery unit is taken off-line so all the lines can be inspected.
Dan Tillema, the board's investigative team leader, said "important issues in the investigation included understanding why the pipe that later failed was kept in service during a late 2011 maintenance turnaround."
By choosing not to replace the pipe that failed, he said Chevron had decided that it was strong enough to last another five years, when the next piping inspection would have been conducted, which is the industry standard.
