Police investigating the disappearance of 12-year-old Tia Sharp were holding her grandmother and two others Saturday after a body was found in south London.
Christine Sharp, 46, and her partner Stuart Hazell are being detained on suspicion of murder after police found the girl's body at Sharp's home in New Addington near Croydon.
Sharp's neighbour Paul Meehan, 39, is being held on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Police found the body on their fourth search of the property and have admitted that "human error" delayed its discovery.
In a statement released Saturday, Scotland Yard's southeast London area commander Neil Basu said the area where the body was found on Friday had been searched the previous Sunday, five days earlier.
"An early review has been conducted and it is now clear that human error delayed the discovery of the body within the house," Basu said.
"We have apologised to Tia's mother that our procedures did not lead to the discovery of the body on this search."
The body found in the house has not been officially confirmed as Tia but a post-mortem examination and formal identification is expected to take place in the coming days.
The 12-year-old was said to have gone missing after leaving the house to visit a nearby shopping centre at about midday on August 3.
