What To Expect In An Alcohol Rehab Program

People in alcohol treatment centers achieve sobriety through detox, medications, counseling and therapies. They go through different stages of the treatment process to reach the goal of living an alcohol-free life.

Detoxification

In detoxification, the patient is cleansed from the physical dependence from alcohol. It is done to remove harmful toxins brought by excessive alcohol intake. Detoxification often lasts from several days to weeks depending on the condition of the patient. Alcohol dependence will lead the patients to experience withdrawal symptoms while on detox. The patient experiences painful symptoms like irritability, depression, anxiety and sweating. In severe cases, the patients may experience seizures and black outs. Patients in detox are in close supervision and assessments by medical practitioners.

Pharmacotherapy

Medications are used to alleviate pain brought by withdrawal symptoms. Oral medications and injections that prevent relapse and reduce alcohol dependence are used in pharmacotherapy. Other medications such as IV fluids are used to prevent dehydration during the therapy.

Treatment Options

Alcohol treatment centers offer different kinds of approaches and treatment solutions according to the varied needs of the patients. You can choose from inpatient, outpatient or residential treatment programs. In Inpatient treatment programs, the patient needs to stay in the treatment facility until he finishes the treatment. The client will receive 24-hour monitoring from the healthcare providers thus it is considered the best treatment option. In an outpatient treatment program the client goes to the center as scheduled and then goes home after each treatment session. The patient could still continue to live a normal life in the society while undergoing this treatment. This is not advisable to patients who are living in an environment where temptations to alcohol are high. You could also choose a religious treatment program that use faith-based approach to recovery.

Counseling

Counseling is a helpful tool that makes a treatment program successful. It could be a one-on-one session or in group. Individual counseling will help the person know the reason why he drinks and find ways to deal with the problem. In group counseling, patients share common experiences about their addictions. This provides support by making the patients feel they are not alone in their struggles.

Aftercare

The last part of the treatment is aftercare is the program done to back-up the self-help groups in their goal to help patients maintain their sobriety. The person stays in the healthcare facility to learn ways on how to cope with stress and challenges that may lead them to relapse.
