Chief Fred Charlton of Clackamas Fire District 1 presented Alexus with a Citizen Life Saving Award Monday for quick, level-headed actions that let everyone in the house escape what could have been a life-threatening fire last month.
"To my knowledge, she is the youngest recipient of a Citizen Life Saving Award," Charlton said. "It was an incredible act for a 7-year-old to be able to wake up, smell smoke and get everyone out of the house -- including their dog. I'm very, very proud of her."
Charlton made the award during the fire district's board meeting at Mt. Scott Fire Station 5.Alexus lives in Salem with her mother, Brandy Chisenall, and attends Auburn Elementary School.? She was visiting her father and step-mother, Bill and Tarinda Osburn, at their home in the 2500 block of Southeast Walnut Street in Oak Grove? on March 17, when she was awakened by the smell of smoke shortly after 2 a.m. She then knocked on their bedroom door.
Bill Osburn, who had been sleeping soundly, heard Alexus and soon realized there was a fire in the house. He got everyone out of the house and called 9-1-1. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which started in a laundry dryer, then aired out the two-story home, which was filled with poisonous smoke.
No one was injured.
Because the home had no working smoke alarms, Charlton gave the family three new alarms and offered to have firefighters install them.
Beau Batsell, an Auburn Elementary teacher who knows Alexus well, said she is normally very quiet, but has held her head higher since receiving the award.
"It seems to have given her a little more confidence," Batsell said. "I think she knows that what she did was very cool."
